Burton's elements - Genre

Burton suggests that each text in a genre shares particular key elements. This theory can relate to newspapers, as some of his elements include:

  •  Plots and Stock situations
This is relevant to newspapers as stock situations and plots are stereotypical situations which could lead to the conventions of different types of newspapers such as a broadsheet containing more content on worldwide news or a tabloid containing more sensational topics. Stock situations can also link to the headlines which could include puns, catchy phrases or advertisement of competitions for example in a tabloid.

  • Icons
Icons are relevant to newspapers as they include the use of colours. Broadsheets use less colour as opposed to a tabloid. Icons can also include the pictures on the front page of the newspaper as tabloids sometimes include revealing pictures of celebrities whereas, broadsheets rarely use images including celebrities.

  • Themes
The themes could represent the ideas in each story for example, a tabloid will contain gossip stories about celebrities or people in general whereas a broadsheet will contain serious topics in great detail.
